Al Jazeera’s coverage of the war in Libya was mere cheerleading. Its simplistic reports never tackled the funding, or the question of who the “rebels” really were. So it came as no surprise that Qatar was arming them. Somebody had to pay for the weaponry, the ammunition, the transportation, the food, the spare parts, or just the fact that these guys were not working their day-jobs, and so could not pay for their families’ food and shelter for all those months!
IIRC The Real News touched on this explicitly, but see the linked article for great info on the role of Qatar in the war in Libya: The Strange Power of Qatar, by Hugh Eakin.
Qatar is, of course, up to more machinations. Syria seems to be their target. I even came across a teaser, a few days ago, suggesting designs on Saudi Arabia–but I did not read that.
Recently, Al Jazeera has taken a more detached stance with respect to Libya. Independent of that observation, the following, linked, article by Jeremy Keenan provides some info on the back-end of this war i.e. the Tuareg rebels and the countries to the south-west of Libya; I had not seen such info in any other article.
